While everyone knows that Chicago is a busy and vibrant city, many people don't know that it is also a beach town! Lake Michigan, one of the Great Lakes, forms the eastern border of the city, and the Chicago Lakeshore spans 24 miles! Along with the 31 beaches, there is a trail that runs the length of the city. This trail is used by walkers, cyclists and skaters; bikes and skates are available for rental at several locations. Another favorite attraction is Navy Pier. Originally built in 1916, it was renovated in the 90's and is now Chicago's #1 tourist attraction. Navy Pier features restaurants, shops, an IMAX cinema, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, as well as a children's museum and a museum of stained glass. The most visible aspect of Navy Pier is the 150-foot tall Ferris wheel, and visitors enjoy the large sculptures and interactive fountains near the entrance. Chicago's lakeshore is an amazing resource that is sure to be a hit with any visitor.
